When a Spring Is on Its Way Out

Any one of these means the spring is done, not the opener. Catching it early keeps a snapped spring from taking the cables and door out of line with it.

  • Loud bang, then nothing

    A firecracker-like snap from the garage followed by a door that will not lift is almost always a broken spring.

  • The door feels twice as heavy

    If it fights you to lift by hand or slides back down when stopped halfway, the springs have lost their tension.

  • A gap in the torsion spring

Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch as the door closes. Both are under heavy load but fail and are replaced differently. We identify which system your door uses, match the correct spring by wire size, inside diameter, and length, and set it up so the door lifts evenly.

If your door uses two springs and one has broken, we strongly recommend replacing both. The springs were installed together and have gone through the same number of cycles, so when one snaps the other is usually close behind. Replacing the pair keeps the door balanced, avoids a second service call within weeks, and protects your opener from pulling against a mismatched, worn spring. If your door only has a single spring, we replace that one and verify the balance. Mechanical damage beyond the springs is covered by our general garage door repair service.

Springs are rated in cycles, where one cycle is the door going up and down once. A standard spring is rated for roughly 10,000 cycles, which is about seven to twelve years for an average household. Homes that use the garage as the main entrance wear springs out much faster. If you open and close the door many times a day, ask us about high-cycle springs rated for 20,000 cycles or more. They cost a little more up front but last far longer. Regular maintenance and balance checks also extend their life.
